An Interconnected Study of Ponds, Wetlands, and the Web of Life

Still Water: The Wonders of Ponds, Pools, Wetlands, and More is far more than a beautifully illustrated nature book. It is a thoughtfully organized introduction to the remarkable web of life found in still-water ecosystems and an especially valuable resource for homeschool families, nature studies, and upper-elementary science.

When I First Opened Still Water

When I first opened Still Water, I expected a beautifully illustrated children's science book about ponds and wetlands. What I discovered instead was something much richer—an interconnected study of ecology that gently guides readers from observing individual organisms to understanding the larger systems that connect them. By the final pages, I wasn't simply thinking about wetlands anymore. I was thinking about relationships, perspective, and the remarkable web of life that depends upon still water.

A Vast Subject Made Accessible

As a former middle school science teacher, I found myself thinking throughout Still Water about all the ways I could have incorporated it into my classroom.

The book begins with ponds, puddles, wetlands, peat bogs, and other still-water environments, then gradually expands into a much broader study of microorganisms, plants, amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates, mammals, birds, fish, adaptations, life cycles, biodiversity, climate, agriculture, and human activity.

What impressed me most is how successfully the authors make such a wide subject approachable without oversimplifying it.

Children are introduced to accurate scientific terminology such as metamorphosis, microorganisms, photosynthesis, eutrophication, biodiversity, and invasive species, but every concept is supported by clear explanations, diagrams, examples, and visual context. Young readers are trusted with real science without being overwhelmed by it.

Illustrations That Teach

Valentina Gottardi’s delicate ink illustrations, accented with mixed media, do much more than decorate the pages.

They invite readers to slow down, observe, compare, and make connections.

Many spreads begin with black-and-white or nearly monochromatic line drawings, while color is used selectively to draw attention to the water, plants, and living organisms. The result feels like a blend of nature journal, scientific field sketchbook, botanical illustration, and watercolor field guide.

The artwork also performs real instructional work. It helps readers understand frog development, insect breathing, pond zones, native and invasive species, amphibian anatomy, seasonal change, and the structure of wetland habitats.

The illustrations would also make a wonderful reference for classroom diagrams and chalkboard work.

From Individual Organisms to Systems

Rather than presenting nature as a collection of isolated facts, Still Water reveals relationships.

Mosquitoes can spread disease, but they are also pollinators and part of the food web. Beavers do more than build dams; they reshape waterways, create habitat, and alter the movement of water. Peat bogs introduce decomposition, carbon storage, and climate in a way that is accurate without becoming intimidating.

The book also includes cultivated waters, connecting ecology with agriculture, history, culture, food production, and human survival.

This is what makes the book feel so complete. It does not stop at naming what lives in a wetland. It asks readers to consider how the pieces fit together, what changes when one part of the system is disturbed, and how humans can both harm and restore these environments.

A Resource for Several Weeks of Study

This is not a book I would use for one isolated lesson.

I could easily see it supporting several weeks of integrated study across upper-elementary and middle-school science, including:

  • microorganisms
  • water quality
  • macroinvertebrates
  • adaptations
  • life cycles
  • food webs
  • ecosystems
  • invasive species
  • the carbon cycle
  • agriculture
  • environmental stewardship

It would also work beautifully as a field companion beside a pond, wetland, puddle, or forest pool, where students could compare what they observe in person with the book’s diagrams and illustrations.

Why This Book Matters

Still Water does not simply teach children what these ecosystems contain.

It helps them understand why these places matter, how their many parts depend upon one another, and why careful observation is the beginning of care.

The book moves naturally from:

What is here?
How does it work?
What is connected?
Why should we protect it?

That progression makes Still Water an unusually thoughtful and useful science resource—one that respects young readers, invites curiosity, and helps them begin to see the natural world not as a list of facts, but as a living web of relationships.

Teacher's Perspective

As I read Still Water, I found myself mentally planning lessons. This is one of those rare books that can support shared reading, classroom reference, homeschool nature study, field exploration, and visual planning for chalkboard illustrations. Few science books remain useful across so many different learning environments.

Best Suited To

Although the publisher recommends this book for Grades 3–9, I think it shines brightest with students in Grades 4–6 for independent reading and extended science or nature study.

A curious third grader may enjoy identifying the parts of a salamander, following the stages from egg to frog, or discovering which insects live beneath the surface of a pond. Around fourth grade, however, many children begin looking beyond the immediately visible and asking larger questions:

How does the salamander depend on the wetland? What happens when an invasive species changes the habitat? Why does the loss of one organism affect others? How do peat bogs connect to the carbon cycle? Where do humans fit into the system?

That shift—from identifying individual parts to beginning to recognize a larger web of relationships—is where Still Water especially shines.
